Wonderful Beaches of Sri Lanka

One of the key attractions of Sri Lanka is its beautiful surrounding coastline beaches which extend to over a thousand kilometers of absolute serenity. The lengthy golden beaches in the West, South and East with their lazy glistening clear azure waters that accommodate year-round water sports, Fishing, Swimming, Sunbathing and Sea-life watching making it the ideal getaway for a beach-holiday.

The northeast monsoon that blows from November to March gives you the opportunity of languishing in the sunny beaches of the west and southern coastlines. The beautiful sandier beaches found on the southern coastal belt starts at Negombo just 37 km north of Colombo and gracefully turns south along the coastline for 273 km to Hambantota. The Southern coastline is also referred to as the ‘Gold Coast’ showcasing many hotels and resorts along its length. Starting from the beautiful Mount Lavinia beach, flowing through lovely beach towns such as Wadduwa, Kalutara, Beruwala, Bentota, Induruwa, Kosgoda, Ahungalla, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Unawatuna, Koggala, Weligama, Mirissa, Dondra, Dickwella, Tangalle and finally reaching Hambantota.

Travel to these lovely beaches, is easy and time-saving by traveling to the western and southern coastal beaches by road starting off from the Negombo along Route A3, up to Colombo. From Colombo, the A2 main-road otherwise known as the Galle Road, travels to the city of Galle, 117 kms south of Colombo. This coast line-road runs all the way up to Hambantota before swinging away into Wellawaya, further inland. The railway currently runs from Negombo to Matara, just short of Dondra Head, which is the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka. From Dondra, Hambantota is just 78 km by road. The E01 southern expressway, gets you from the Kottawa Interchange right up to the city of Galle in just one hour or further down south to the Matara interchange at Godagama in just one and a half hours driving. For an even quicker mode of travel such as flying, the international airport at Katunayake, and one in Mattala in the Hambantota district, as well as smaller domestic landing sites in Ratmalana and Koggala are serviced by domestic air-taxi and helicopter services.

Visiting the east coast during the southwest monsoon from April to October brings you a whole new offering of beautiful long flat beaches with fascinating beach experiences. These eastern and northern coastal belt beaches offer you loads of leisure activity such as a wide range of water sports, warm sea-bathing, amazing coral reefs, diving to shipwrecks, including visits to vast still lagoons and underwater coral gardens that are fascinatingly habituated with marine and bird life that will take your breath away. Scuba diving and snorkeling experiences offered by professionally qualified diving schools, wind surfing, fishing, canoeing and water skiing are some of the stimulating leisure activities available to be enjoyed. Stretching north in an arc from Arugam Bay all the way up to Kuchchaveli approximately 275 km along the east coast boasts perfect beaches, lazy long stretches of beach and seemingly miles of excitingly clear shallow water, lovely bays, coves and deep natural harbours. Some of the more exquisite beaches on the east coast are Nilaveli, Kuchchaveli, Marble Bay, Sweat Bay and the Dead Man’s Cove with its magnificent harbour, towards the north of Trincomalee. The southern part of the east coast includes peaceful, placid beaches of Arugam Bay, Passikudah, and Kalkudah.

Traveling to the north and east coast is by driving along the A4 road running across the country from Colombo via Ratnapura, – (the gem city) through the Central Highlands on the way and then reaching the east coast at Pottuvil, , 320 km from Colombo. At Pottuvil, the A4 turns north to Batticaloa , at a distance of 110 km. The 137 km stretch of coastline from Batticaloa to Trincomalee, is fed by the A15 and the last beach at Kuchchavelli,, which is some 35 km further up can be reached by a secondary road. Trincomalee , can also be reached by train while it is connected to all the major road-networks in the country. There are domestic airports at Batticaloa and Trincomalee for air-taxi services.

Accommodation along the coastline is plentiful with an array of itineraries for that special memorable beach holiday with beautiful and serene locations and quality service, comfortably priced. While the most developed resorts are in the south, south-west and the west coast, even the east and north east coast now has a range of luxurious comfortable, five star amenities, adventure tours, vibrant nightlife, and international cuisine to be enjoyed. Water boarding, canoeing, sailing, boating, deep sea fishing, snorkeling, surfing, deep sea diving, river cruises, water polo, water gymnastics, water and jet-ski racing and Banana Boat riding are among many water sport facilities on offer. Seasonal sea bathing as well as fresh or sea water swimming pools are on offer at many of these hotels.

The food while being cosmopolitan, spans an exquisitely tantalizing range of sea food from a fresh and plentiful catch, lovingly created by excellent chefs at most of these lovely hotels. There is a fairly widespread choice spanning traditionally spicy Sri Lankan food to standard international menus. As always the rich, tasty sweet abundance of local tropical fresh fruit and juices is a must-have at any time of the day, especially on a beauty sunny beach-front holiday.
